Education
A robust science, technology, engineering and math education system are vital to maintaining our position as world leaders of medical innovation and scientific discovery. Today, however, that leadership in medical innovation is threatened.
Between 1986 and 2003:
- The U.S. share of global R&D investment declined from 46% to 37%.
- The U.S. share of global patents decreased from 54% to 52%.
- The U.S. share of scientific publications fell from 38% to 30%.
- The U.S. share of scientific researchers fell from 41% to 29%.
To stay ahead of the curve, we have to commit to investing in science and technical education at the elementary and secondary levels, and make sure that tomorrow's scientists and researchers receive the best training we can provide. The future of American discovery depends on it.
"I am confident that if we recommit ourselves to discovery,” said President Barack Obama, “if we support science education to create the next generation of scientists and engineers right here in America; if we have the vision to believe and invest in things unseen, then we can lead the world into a new future of peace and prosperity.”
Quotes

– John E. Jankowski, senior analyst at the National Science Foundation
