Saving Lives

"Medical miracles do not happen simply by accident.  They result from painstaking and costly research -- from years of lonely trial and error, much of which never bears fruit -- and from a government willing to support that work.  From life-saving vaccines, to pioneering cancer treatments, to the sequencing of the human genome, that is the story of scientific progress in America."
– President Barack Obama

According to the American Cancer Society, hundreds of thousands of Americans died from cancer in 2008, and countless others will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.  New compounds and technologies have already saved countless lives, helping patients to beat cancer, live with HIV/AIDS, and experience remission or a cure from countless painful, debilitating and deadly diseases and conditions.

Researchers are studying new medicines, tools and treatments in an effort to conquer cancer in the coming years. President Barack Obama stated that the economic recovery plan ”will launch a new effort to conquer a disease that has touched the life of nearly every American by seeking a cure for cancer in our time.“ Hundreds and hundreds of new drugs are currently tested for the treatment of the most common forms of cancer, including lung, breast, colorectal and prostate cancer.

Tomorrow’s live-saving advances are researched today. We simply cannot let a challenging economic environment slow the pace of discovery. We must ensure that medical research and innovation remains a top priority.

The road to a future free of cancer is paved with policies that support scientists, fund research and create a positive business environment that attracts top talent and invests in success.
