Strengthening Our Economy

“Many other countries have realized that science and technology are key to economic growth and prosperity.  They're catching up to us.  Americans [can not] rest on our laurels.”
– Jennifer Bond, former vice president for international affairs of the Council on Competitiveness

American leadership in medical innovation must be a key part of our economic recovery. In the United States, biopharmaceutical research companies employ tens of thousands of highly skilled researchers, scientists and other workers, and generate employment for millions more. Each new job at a biopharmaceutical company generates nearly 4 more in other sectors across the economy. Communities around the country rely on these companies and their employees generating economic activity and tax revenue.

Furthermore, medical breakthroughs improve the health of our workforce, making them more productive.

  • The health care industry in the United States provides approximately 14 million jobs and is expected to generate 3 million new wage and salary jobs between 2006 and 2016, more than any other industry.
  • Seven of the 20 fastest growing occupations are health care related.
  • Biopharmaceutical research companies employed 686,000 people and generated an additional 2.5 million jobs in other industries in 2006.
